Racbox (Amazon) Light Bar & Pods

Post by Max » July 16th, 2018, 10:47 am

Hello all,

I wanted to share my experience with an Amazon light bar, more specifically the "Racbox" kit that comes with 2 pods and all the wiring/mounting. My reasoning for going with a cheap setup like this is simple. I am attempting to keep The Black Rhino project under $5,000 and that includes what I paid for the Jeep itself. I will be spending most of the budget on an axle swap, spring over setup and lockers.

So here we go... I ordered this thing on June 24th for $173. It had I think 7 reviews and 4/5 stars. I read through the reviews and most people stated that the brackets are a little wonky but otherwise the lights themselves are fantastic.
Here is the link to Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HZ911F6

Aside from there being no instructions, everything came nicely packaged and well separated. The light bar felt sturdy and seemed to be decent quality. Skeptical of cheap stuff from Amazon, I whipped up some jumpers and tested all 3 lights and to my surprise, they all worked! The thing even came with a wireless module with a remote control.

I was also skeptical of its IP67 waterproof rating, so before I even unboxed anything else, I grabbed the hose and sprayed all 3 lights for several minutes. After they dried, I checked for condensation inside the housing. I found none. I checked for ANY signs of leaks and found none! Time to install!

The brackets actually fit well. I didn't notice any "wonky-ness" as some of the Amazon reviews described. I did have to improvise a little with some custom hardware on the passenger side due to old rusty bolts, but that's a whole separate story.

It ended up raining anyway, so I got a second waterproof test for free!

Pretend the "Sierra Stompers" sticker is gone... because it is... now.

The wiring job is not ideal but I wanted the system operational for an upcoming camping trip!

At least the wiring setup is nicely wrapped in a black shiny sleeve!

Folks, here is the absolute worst part of this whole lighting kit.... the switch that it comes with has an "always on" light... it's red for off and green for on. This will be replaced with a proper rocker switch ASAP!

So anyway, this is really just the beginning of testing this thing out... it has not been out on a trail yet. I will update my opinion on that in due time.

For now, I like it. I would recommend it. It's bright, seems to actually be waterproof and the wiring is nicely arranged. I just don't like the button!

That's all!
